Michael Dell has given up the role of chief executive at the manufacturer to concentrate more on research and technology.
Dell's board of directors met yesterday to appoint Kevin Rollins, currently chief operating officer, as chief executive.
The move will become official at Dell's annual shareholder meeting on 16 July.
Dell will remain as chairman of the board, leaving "a unique, successful 'two-in-a-box' senior management structure" in place, the company said in a statement.
Rollins will spearhead company strategy and operations, while Dell's role will emphasise "trends in technology and customer preference, including research and development".
