Following in from its HBB1 Broadband Booster (reviewed here), Hawking Technologies has released a wireless adapter unlike any other we've seen.

The satellite-shaped HWU8DD (see our blog, the Test Bed) is a directional 802.11g wireless adapter with an 8dbi antenna - most standard wireless antennae are around 2dbi.

However, it's not just the antenna strength that allows for stronger wireless connections - the fact that its dish shaped means it's also highly directional.

The dish can be rotated and tilted in order to be aimed it in the direction of your router and therefore achieve the best possible wireless signal.

The device houses a collection of five LEDs mounted on the front to indicate the current signal strength.

Despite being an 8dbi wireless adapter, it draws all the power it needs through a single USB2 link.

We tested it in multiple environments and were impressed with the results.

While the standard 802.11g PCI Express in our desktop PC could only muster up a wireless link rated at 'Good', the HWU8DD managed to secure an 'Excellent' connection.

We also found that aiming the dish in different directions unearthed previously undetected wireless networks.

Although the HWU8DD doesn't feature enhanced speed technologies such as Super G, you will experience an increase in speed if it manages to secure a stronger 802.11g wireless link than your standard Wifi card.

The HWU8DD obviously costs more than a standard USB wireless adapter and if your wireless PC currently has a strong link to your router there's little point in buying it.

However, for those who suffer from weak connections it's a terrific piece of kit. What's more, it's a cinch to set up.
