A neat dual-function display, but the picture quality isn’t that good in either TV or monitor modes

Review: Evesham T1505 LCD television

Thinking of buying a new LCD monitor? Consider one with a TV tuner built in.

An LCD monitor that will also tune into TV stations is an appealing idea. Not only is there no need for setting up computer software and hardware, the PC doesn't have to be switched on to watch television either.

The Evesham T1505 is a 15.1in widescreen display, which equates to 13in wide by 8in high. This isn’t very big and you'll need to be quite close to get a decent view.

Unfortunately, the viewing angles hinder things further. Although the manual quotes 75-degrees horizontal and 70-degrees vertical, we noticed colours start to shift at around 45 degrees horizontally from the perpendicular, and slightly less, vertically.

Even if you’re viewing exactly head-on, the TV picture looks ‘misty’. This can be compensated for with the contrast and saturation controls within the menu, but it never completely goes away.

The T1505 comes with a remote control to adjust screen settings as well as changing channels and volume. The speakers built into the monitor are, as usual, small, weak, tinny and not that good at reproducing sound.

Connect the screen to a PC as a monitor and we found the picture to be not that sharp, making text on the Windows desktop tricky to read.

Although the refresh rate is a comparatively slow 16ms, we saw no signs of 'ghosting' (pictures leaving a slight trail behind them) on games and DVDs.

However, with 15in LCD monitors currently running at around £100 and standalone TV tuners at £65-£70, this device looks a bit pricey.

It does, however, come with a 12V car adapter, which might appeal to caravan-types.

• Can be powered from a 12V car adapter
• Widescreen for movie viewing

Bad points

Overall
The Evesham T1505 is a lightweight and versatile LCD monitor but its poor PC picture quality won't appeal to anyone looking to use it primarily for computer work.
