Microsoft blows Vista trumpet for Christmas

Vista logo programme to guide users to Vista capable hardware and software

Microsoft has certified more than 250 computer systems, peripheral devices and software applications for the Certified for Windows Vista and 'Runs on Windows Vista' logo programmes.

While the first logo signals only compatibility, the second promises a " superior" end-user experience when used with Vista by taking advantage of the software's new features.

The currently certified products are expected to start selling in time for the forthcoming holiday shopping season.

Microsoft also touted its Windows Vista Premium Ready logo programme, which informs consumers that a new system is able to upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium Edition.

Systems capable of running only Windows Vista Home Basic will be identified by a 'Windows Vista Capable' logo.

The premium version of the operating system offers several advanced features, the most important of which being the ability to run the Aero graphical interface.

The interface requires a fairly advanced graphics processor, making for more expensive hardware.

For gamers Microsoft is offering a 'Games for Windows' logo programme, guaranteeing that a game will work on 64-bit Windows Vista and supports the 'Windows Vista Games Explorer' functionality.

The latter allows users to easily download updates and bonus features, and enables parents to block access to inappropriate content based on official game rating systems such as that provided by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.
