Video-sharing site YouTube has removed more than 29,000 video clips from its site, according to Reuters.

The removal of the clips is reported to have come after the Japan Society for the Rights of Authors, Composers, and Publishers complained to YouTube about copyright infringement.

YouTube did not immediately return requests for comment from vnunet.com

Copyright infringement was a concern among analysts when the video-sharing site was purchased by Google earlier this month for $1.65bn in stock.

YouTube, which serves an estimated 100 million videos daily, has come under fire due to its inability to prevent users from uploading copyrighted materials, though the company does remove reported copyright violations.

Last spring, YouTube agreed to crack down on the re-posting of Saturday Night Live clips after NBC lodged a highly publicized complaint.

On its site, YouTube advises users not to post any copyrighted materials without permission, and warns that users who repeatedly violate copyrights could have their accounts deleted.
