Following the success of its Diamond Pro 740SB, NEC-Mitsubishi has been quick to launch the 750SB.

Like its predecessor, this is a flat-screen 17in model with a 0.25mm unified grille-pitch that makes use of the company's Super Bright (SB) Diamondtron M2 tube.

As the name suggests, this has been designed to offer enhanced brightness levels to improve image quality.

There are two SB modes: the first is designed for static images and the second for moving images.

We were impressed by the boost in brightness and contrast in both image types, and the degree to which NEC-Mitsubishi has kept a tight rein on blooming - a problem that occurs when the energy of the electron beams is increased.

The other big change is the styling; it's not so drab this time, with its metallic-grey bezel framing the screen beautifully.

The rest of the chassis is attractively angular, but you'll only find a captive D-Sub cable around the back.

The on-screen display menu system is intuitive with self-explanatory icons. The usual array of adjustments for position, size and geometry are available, along with four customisable RGB and colour temperature modes.

However, there are no colour convergence controls, which is a pity, as even though horizontal and vertical registration are good, they may drift over time.

Using Displaymate at the recommended resolution of 1,024 x 768 at 85Hz, the 740SB scored well in all the geometry tests.

Power regulation was steady too, while text focus and resolution were commendable.

We were also pleasantly surprised at the price of the 750SB - at just over £185 it's certainly competitive.

Given that and its all-round performance, you can't go far wrong.

Cons:
Lacks colour convergence controls

All in all, there's little to fault in the 750SB. It performs well, looks good and, when it comes to brightness for imaging use, it's second to none. The price is keen too
