Learning to type properly makes a huge improvement to using computers but it can be tricky to get started. Addictive Typing Lessons is an add-on for the Firefox browser containing all you need to learn this important skill.
Once installed a small picture of a keyboard appears on the right of the bottom of the Firefox window. A left-click on this starts the add-on in a separate window.
There are 26 lessons included with Addictive Typing Lessons and you can add your own tests if you want to improve your skills with rarely used words.
A lesson consists of a collection of words. They start at a very basic level to familiarise you with the home keys and the keys that the fingers should rest on before moving to using all the keys on the keyboard. Performance is ranked by speed (words per minute) and accuracy. The last 15 scores for each lesson are displayed along with the top score.
Addictive typing lessons can be used with alternative keyboard layouts to the standard qwerty including Dvorak. The keys that will be used in the test are shown above the text.
There is an alternative version for Linux users that adjusts the text boxes so that all the text can be seen.
