Hosting a wiki can be very rewarding as it takes advantage of everybody's expertise.
Not all websites need something as big or complicated as the software behind the biggest wiki of the all Wikipedia and this is where Dokuwiki comes in.
The biggest difference of Dokuwiki is that it does not require a database to work, only the programming language PHP must be present on the web host. PHP is normally included with the cheapest hosting accounts but not databases.
Installation is quite simple. Unzip the files from the download and then upload them onto a webhost. Then enter the address of the install file into a web browser to start the wizard.
Anyone can edit documents held on Dokuwiki although it is possible to create user accounts to keep track on who has made what changes.
The editor is basic, rather than What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) but still quite simple to use with practice. The page can be previewed to make sure there are no mistakes. HTML and PHP code can also be inserted into documents.
As with many open source projects there are plenty of extras that can be downloaded from the plugins page on the Dokuwiki website.
System requirements:
Webhost with PHP 4.3.3 or higher. Apache is preferred but other webserver software reported to work.
