Web ads support many (if not most) websites online but they can be annoying, especially if you are on a dial up connection and they increase the time spent waiting for pages to load. Adblock is an addon for Firefox that should help ease this problem.
The home of the project at http://adblock.mozdev.org/ includes far more information about how the addon works. In essence lists of know ad sources are used to generate filters so Adblock knows what to block.
