Well-equipped printer does the business

For this group test we wanted to avoid multifunction devices, which tend to be less capable of producing photo-quality prints than dedicated photo printers.

The Canon Pixma MP510 is an exception to the rule. Not only is the quality of its photo prints stunning, but it also functions as a copier/scanner.

It’s true that there are better-quality standalone scanners available, particularly if you are serious about digitising existing prints, negatives or slides. Even so, it is a useful additional function, particularly when it seems to have relatively little impact on the device’s size, price or photo-printing quality.

Design-wise, the MP150 is quite a neat unit when it’s all closed up. Opening up the various trays, compartments and flaps, however, starts to make it feel a little less tidy.

Lifting the LCD screen flap reveals a whole range of buttons for navigating and printing photos without the need for the PC to be switched on. And an infrared port may be useful for wirelessly sending photos from a suitably equipped cameraphone directly to the printer.

This article is part of a group test of photo printers.
