It's quite hard to find a reasonably priced satellite-navigation device that includes European maps as well as speed camera and traffic notifications.
That's because companies tend to regard these as extras and charge accordingly.
It's impressve, then, that the X-970 comes loaded with all these features and, in contrast to its competitors, even offers free online updates of both maps and speed cameras.
It's slim and light enough to fit into a pocket but it still has a large and bright screen so there's no need to squint while using it. The mounting bracket was secure when affixed to the windscreen, which is better than what we've seen with some devices.
Voice directions were clear, timely, and loud enough to be easily heard and the accompanying on-screen guidance is intuitive and easy to follow. A helpful pop-up message even shows which road signs to look out for next. On longer motorway trips, the map automatically switches from 3D to 2D so it's easier to see your progress.
The ability to browse preset destinations in categories such as hotels and entertainment is nothing out of the ordinary, but we like the option to quickly locate the nearest petrol station or car park from the main screen. It includes content from both the Michelin Guide, on hotels and restaurants, and the Green Guide, which covers general tourist sites.
Impressively, the X-970T flags up speed cameras along with the relevant speed limit on the continent as well as in Britain. We found that it was a little over-zealous when it came to notifiying us of coming cameras, though, and there's no way of reducing the distance at which it warns of a camera.
It's possible to make hands-free calls on a Bluetooth mobile phone through the unit, but the tiny speaker means this only works effectively in very quiet cars. The MP3 player is not particularly useful, for the same reason. It does include a headphone socket, so it could be handy for those using the device on foot.
The X-970 is a reliable, easy-to-use, impressive sat nav. The only omission was a carry case, but its all-round performance makes it a good buy.
