Review: Creative Gigaworks T40 speakers

Great sound for games, music and video

The Gigaworks T40 is a standard set of computer speakers without a subwoofer.

While we say 'standard', the excellent quality of sound from the T40 actually distances it some way from its competitors.

The unit is easy to set up and use - it's a simple matter of plugging in the supplied cables. It even comes with an adapter for different kinds of sound output, and screw-on bases for each speaker.

On games, music and video, the T40's sound quality is uniformly excellent. Bass sounds came through loud and resonant, while treble came through with a piercing quality.

There are separate bass and treble controls on the front of one of the speakers so you can tailor each to your own tastes. Volume reached quite high levels without distorting. There's no auxiliary input but there is a connector for Creative's iPod dock, sold separately.

We can't fault the quality of sound, but the price will be a big turn-off for most people - they are certainly better than most £50-60 speakers we've looked at, and if you're interested in quality above all else, the T40 fits the bill, but others will find the price difference too steep.
