Haulage and distribution company Scanfreight is using real-time tracking systems to improve the management of its fleet and enhance the accuracy of route planning.

It has implemented location-based technology in 26 vehicles to provide greater visibility of its fleet through GPRS tracking, which can be accessed online.

Scanfreight will be able to reduce costs through improved route planning and traffic management and give customers more accurate delivery times.

‘It is important to have a greater degree of management control over our fleet to move our business forward and one of the best ways of doing this is by seeing exactly what is going on with every truck in our fleet,’ said fleet director Richard Adlem.

‘Implementing telematics gives us visibility of our entire fleet, which helps us to keep customers up-to-date when they need information.’

Vehicles have been fitted with a small electronic in-vehicle-unit (IVU) which is tracked by GPS in real-time and transmits data to an online control centre.

Scanfreight chose Cybit’s Fleetstar-Online system, which also offers fleet insurance reductions through Norwich Union.

Scanfreight can fix fleet premiums for three years and earn an annual profit share of up to 16 per cent.

‘As well as the operational and cost benefits we expect from the system, we will also get a better insurance deal through the offer from Norwich Union,’ Adlem said.

‘It will help us to save money through fixed premiums and risk recognition rebates.’

The system is scalable to meet any future growth within the fleet.
