M&S to re-develop web site infrastructure

Retailer recognises potential of online sales

Written by Dave Friedlos

High street retailer Marks & Spencer is re-developing its web site and improving functionality after its online sales rose more than four times above shop sales.

It will re-launch the web site in spring next year after online sales grew 44 per cent since last year, while overall sales rose 11 per cent to £3.9bn in six months.

In its interim report, the retailer said online business had continued to grow strongly from what was initially a relatively small base.

‘We recognise the significant opportunity to develop this channel and together with Amazon have been working to redevelop our website to improve functionality and customer experience,’ the report said.

‘We have restructured e-commerce, which has now become a business unit in its own right.’

Some 1.8 million people visited the Marks & Spencer web site in September, 2006, or one in every 15 Britons online.
