Support for e-crime victims

Web site will offer advice and provide independently-recorded statistics

Written by Tom Young

The first web site dedicated to helping victims of e-crime has been set up.

The www.e-victims.org will feed information to trading standards, the Office of Fair Trading and police where necessary.

The site will help tackle the growing threat of electronic crime, said Lord Erroll, a member of the House of Lords committee on personal internet security.

"Online scams today are getting more sophisticated and they will catch more people out - that is why we need the service to support internet users," he said.

The site will provide advice to victims as well as recording independent statistics.

"The only current figures on this type come from Apacs so we want to help raise awareness of the situations," said a spokeswoman for CIC, the not-for-profit organisation that set up the site.

The site was partly set-up by Roland Perry, vice chair of the Internet Crime Forum.
