Audiovisual distributor Steljes is upping its focus on bespoke software developed for its Smart Technologies range of interactive whiteboards, which it has claimed will enable VARs to sell more Smart boards.

Steljes launched a software accreditation programme for Smart boards last January. It also recently appointed a specialist in educational software to drive the programme.

Catherine Howard, newly appointed software partnership manager, told CRN: “Since the scheme was launched last January we have got 30 accredited software developers and 200 accredited titles. My remit is to take the software accreditation scheme one step further.”

The programme aims to help teachers who buy a Smart interactive whiteboard to choose the right software for their needs. Under the scheme, accredited software is classified as either Approved, Enhanced or Exclusive.

“Teachers can be assured that all Steljes accredited software will work with their Smart boards,” she said.

Howard added that this year Steljes will alert its partners to the importance of the scheme.

“We will always be looking for developers and titles. It will be a rolling programme that will help VARs sell more Smart boards, because what teachers really need is software to use with this hardware,” she said.

Colin Messenger, senior business consultant at Decision Tree Consulting, said: “Software is a brilliant differentiator for VARs, and it can often be the difference in the sale.”

Lee Bevan, managing director of reseller Leapfrog Computers, said: “We became a Steljes accredited partner in April 2005 and went on to become a Premier accredited partner in November. Our business is doing very well from Smart boards. Software has been the missing link. There is generic software available, but if Steljes is accrediting bespoke software it is great news.”
