REVIEW: Abbyy FineReader 9 Professional

OCRs any document on any media

FineReader 9 takes Abbyy’s very successful OCR package and enhances the usability and recognition rates.

The first change is QuickTasks, which gives access to regular OCR tasks. Plus there is now a single-edit image window that allows users to rotate, straighten, crop and invert images. Recognition has been enhanced with adaptive document recognition technology (ADRT), which treats multi-page documents as a single entity, so documents with headers, footers and page numbers are dealt with correctly. ADRT also comes into its own when converting text from digital camera images.

As well as the changes to the interface and the recognition system, there is also support for more file types including gif and XPS as well as PDF/A output, and full support for Vista.
