Samsung and Toshiba have performed well in a new guide to green electronics, just released by eco-awareness group Greenpeace.

The Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics ranks firms from the industry depending on their environmental practices. In the latest rankings both firms improved their positions, each sharing highest place, scoring 7.7 out of a possible 10 points.

Toshiba, Greenpeace said, leapt up from sixth position in the last survey, while Samsung moved up from second place. Toshiba was credited for removing itself from an industry group that Greenpeace disapproves of, the Electronic Manufacturers Coalition for Responsible Recycling, which demands that consumers pay Advanced Recycling Fees when buying kit, While Samsung was, amongst other reasons, applauded for the responsible use of materials.

Other firms, including Sony and Lenovo remained constant in their ranking, while Sony Ericsson - Drops 6 places due to losing points on its e-waste policy and practice. Apple, Greenpeace said, "continues its steady rise". Microsoft was third from bottom, however, it is rising in the rankings and scored highly on its use of chemicals.
