If you want a portable projector that has a decent resolution and the sort of brightness that works under normal lighting conditions, then you have to pay for the privilege. In the case of the Relisys RLP2000, you get a 2,000 ansi lumens rating for £2,000, which has a certain symmetry.
Although the RLP2000 is classed as portable, it's not very compact due to its 4kg weight. However, you could carry it from one presentation to another without too much strain.
Setup is quick and easy, and the controls are well-placed and intuitive to use. We felt no need to refer to the manual to get the RLP2000 connected and adjusted, thanks to the Auto button. The manual configuration controls were also simple to adjust.
Relisys includes VGA, S-Video, PS/2, RCA audio, RCA composite video and mini jack audio cables, but no USB cable to enable the wireless mouse function on the remote. That's listed as an accessory, as are a Mac adaptor and component video cables.
The cooling fan is quite noisy when the RLP2000 is running. Colour control and registration are very good, as are colour graduation and greyscales, although black isn't quite as absolute as it might be, which is typical of LCD technology.
Image quality is less satisfactory. This is particularly true of the upper left quadrant of our test projector, where some flicker was evident. We weren't surprised to see that the very edges of the display were less sharp than the centre, but that didn't detract from the very satisfactory display.
We found replacement bulbs on sale for £247. As they have a rated 2,000 hours of life, this is a relatively cheap running cost, but don't lose sight of the fact that you're paying a premium for the 2,000 lumens rating.
