The launch of Intel's Atom at Computex earlier this month rather eclipsed
that of AMD's new notebook platform with its Turion x2 64bit processor. But AMD
staged what was virtually a second launch of the platform at HP's big Connecting
Your World event in Berlin this week.
AMD
boasted that eight of the notebooks launched by HP used the Turion x2, though
Intel processors are offered as an option. AMD, having lost the edge to Intel on
pure performance, is moving focused from the processor to the platform,
stressing the advantage of it ATI graphics.
"Innovating is about delivering what users need. It is not simply about
performance," said Chris Winiewitz, notebook business development manager.
He claimed that the AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-80 processor and ATI Radeon HD
3200 GPU, part of the 780G chipset, had three times the 3D performance of the
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor with the x3100 graphics media accelerator.
"Essentially what we have done is taken the previous generation of discrete
graphics and shrunk that down for the notebook," he said.
ATI Avivo high-density technology gave the platform five times the
performance of the same Intel platform processing 1080p high-definition video,
Winiewitz said. "And we have put this on processing on the chipset rather than
having it done in the processor… we are doing it on a lower-poer device so that
we are able to save power on the notebook."
He also claimed that AMD's use of the Atheros AR9280 Wifi module gave a 62
percent greater throughout than Intel's 4965AGN module.
