CDex is an excellent piece of freeware for recording music from a CD to your hard drive. Windows Media Player can do the same thing but adds copy protection, which can cause problems with MP3 players.
CDex can use the CDDB online database for identifying the titles of an album and a track if you are connected to the internet.
There are lots of options in this program that can make it rather confusing on first glance. The majority of options can be left on their default settings, however, and the help file is good at explaining everything.
