Desktop Earth is a neat little application that makes use of images from two Nasa projects: Blue Marble Next Generation Imagery and Earth's City Lights.
A high-resolution representation of Earth is generated using these images in almost real time. Day and night are accurately captured, with the sun's overheard position being emulated.
Also viewable are the snow cover and foliage changes that occur throughout the seasons.
