The major problem for any software developer is producing software that works across multiple editions of Windows and will support the various hardware peripherals that you can connect to your PC. Backup software, for example, often has to support both the operating system, understand where files are located (to make the selection of files for backup, as seamless as possible), whether a USB drive is connected for auto-backup and Internet protocols so you can backup and restore, from an online location. There are many possibilities where it can go wrong. Go wrong and you might even lose your data.
For this reason, it’s always a wise idea to have the latest update installed on your computer. With the rise of broadband, there’s no reason why you can’t keep checking the software suppliers’ website for updates. However, end-users often have so much software installed, that they do not have time to regularly check for software updates.
A solution would be to provide an auto-update facility within your application that would check an online facility to see if the software has been updated and, if it has, download in the background, close the open application and install the latest update. All as seamless as possible, of course.
InstantUpdate enables a software developer to add an auto-update facility to your software. It is fairly customisable and will enable you to set up the various options so that you can choose the server where you’d get the software to check for an update, Registry configuration and much more.
