IBM is to rebrand its diverse server line under the banner 'eserver' tomorrow as part of a drive to simplify its server sales and support.

Big Blue will rename the S/390, AS/400, RS/6000 and Netfinity brands and add the eserver prefix. The major marketing exercise will give IBM one brand of servers to tout, rather than the confusing array currently faced by customers.

According to the IBM specialist website Search390, the S/390 will be renamed eserver zSeries 900; the AS/400 will become the eserver iSeries 400; the RS/6000 will become the eserver pSeries 600; and Netfinity will become eserver xSeries.

Phil Payne, managing director at analysts Isham Research, said: "IBM is trying to overcome the idea that you would deal with one division for one server and one division for another, and that they would all have different terms and conditions."

IBM is also expected to announce an updated version of the S/390 with 64bit support.
