Microsoft has launched its 'MSN Wallet' service, a new version of its online identity system designed to let consumers make purchases at internet sites more easily.
Although users have to load their credit card details, billing address and other personal information onto MSN Wallet's database, Microsoft has said that all such information is electronically encrypted and that the database is stored on servers located in access-controlled facilities.
Microsoft said that whenever users shop at websites that are part of the MSN Wallet network, their information will be entered automatically.
Participating retailers include Nordstrom, OfficeMax, Blue Nile and Ritz Camera.The program replaces the Passport Express Purchase program, which will end in March 2003.
"Consumers want online shopping to be as simple and dependable as sending email," said Jim Barr, general manager of MSN Shopping.
