Oracle today introduced its Database Lite 10g, claiming that the offering is the first database to roll out grid computing services to mobile workers.

The product, which features tools for developing and deploying database applications in mobile environments, is designed to extend features common in mission-critical back office systems to mobile and embedded devices. It is ased on Oracle's Grid Computing infrastructure.

Oracle Database Lite 10g is designed to allow mobile users to operate in areas where network coverage is unavailable, unreliable or unsecured. Using a bi-directional synchronisation server with a publication and subscription-based model, the database enables mobile users to synchronise data between corporate database and mobile devices at regular intervals via Lan, wireless, satellite or radio.

In case of a network failure, the offering features recovery systems to allow users to resume activity from time-based checkpoints where they left off.

The database ships with support for Java and .NET tools including as Oracle JDeveloper 10g and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, it also supports the Microsoft ADO.NET interface, providing developers with integration between Java and .NET environments.

Applications can be built using programming languages such as Java, C/C++ and Visual Studio for platforms including Linux, Microsoft Windows CE/NT/2000/XP/2003, Palm OS, and Pocket PC.

"As mobile devices transition from purely personal devices to capable business tools, organisations must deploy applications built on a flexible business-class platform capable of supporting current user needs, while allowing future enhancements and connectivity for a variety of business requirements."

According to Oracle, mobile technologies are no longer simply the domain of sales force and field service workers, but rather are being increasingly adopted by industries including defence, national security health and public safety.

"Making information available directly and in real-time to employees on the frontline -- serving or selling to customers -- is an increasingly critical step to gaining such efficiencies."
