Apple peels wraps off next-gen iPod mini

Cheaper 4GB and 6GB models with more battery life

Written by Steve Ranger

Apple today unveiled the second generation of its iPod mini digital music players. A new 4GB model is priced at $199, while its 6GB bigger brother will retail at $249. Both models are available worldwide immediately in a choice of silver, pink, blue and green.

The revamped models feature increased battery life of up to 18 hours, according to Apple, along with USB charging and a lightweight design.

However, rumours that appeared on the web earlier this week suggesting that the models would feature a colour screen appear wide of the mark.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said: "At this breakthrough price point, and with more than twice the battery life, the new iPod mini should appeal to even more music lovers."

The company has sold over 10 million iPods to date, and claims that the device has over 70 per cent market share.

The latest models includes earbud headphones, a belt clip case, a USB 2.0 cable and a CD with iTunes 4.7.1 for Mac and Windows computers. ITunes 4.7.1 can be downloaded here.

An optional USB power adapter is available for $29, and other accessories include the iPod Dock for desktop syncing and charging, in-ear headphones and an arm band.
