Google takes to the road

Mobile access to maps and local information

Written by Tom Sanders in California

Google has added driving directions and local business listings to its current portfolio of mobile offerings.

The services are part of an attempt by the search firm to expand its offerings to devices beyond the desktop computer.

"Google's mobile search and Google SMS services are important advancements in our goal to provide users with immediate access to valuable information anywhere and anytime," said Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's vice president for product management.

Driving directions can be obtained through the company's SMS service. Users send an SMS with their search query to a code number that Google manages.

The service already offers weather forecasts, movie show times, price comparison information and stock quotes.

The local offering requires a mobile web browser supporting XHTML and a wireless data plan. The mobile services are currently available only to users in the US and Canada.
