Quake coming to a mobile near you

Network-ready version of first person shooter being developed for mobile devices

Written by Iain Thomson

Pulse Interactive and ID Software have signed a deal to bring Quake to mobile phones.

The popular game, launched for the PC in 1996, was the first mass-market first person shooter that could be played against other people over the internet.

Details about the mobile version are sketchy, but the game appears to run at 640x480 pixel resolution and will refresh at 25 frames per second, unheard of for mobile phone processors. It may also be embedded in phones before sale.

The game will be network-ready so that up to 16 people can play each other in real time online. No release date or price has yet been announced.
