Online retailer in talks with music firms to offer iTunes/iPod rival

Written by William Eazel

Online retailer Amazon is in "advanced" talks with four top music firms to form a feasible rival to Apple's iPod music player and iTunes music service.

A digital music service run by Amazon could be up and running as early as this summer.

The company is in talks to license music from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI.

Amazon is considering a subscription service that would include a discounted portable music player bearing the Amazon brand. Amazon officials were unavailable for comment.
