Motorola has reported record first-quarter sales of $10.01bn, up 23 per cent on the $8.16bn in the same period last year.

However, net earnings dropped from $692m in the three months to the end of March 2005 to $686m in the same period in 2006.

Motorola shipped 46.1 million mobile handsets during the quarter, up 61 per cent on the first quarter of 2005, and up three per cent on the 44.7 million handsets shipped during the fourth quarter.

As a result, the operator expanded its global market share in the handset space to an estimated 21 per cent, further narrowing the gap on market leader Nokia.

Motorola launched six new handsets during the quarter, two for GSM networks, three for CDMA and one for iDEN.

Sales at the firm's government and enterprise mobility solutions segment totalled $1.54bn, up two per cent on the year-ago quarter. Operating earnings increased to $171m, compared with $167m in the year-ago quarter.

Motorola also announced an agreement to sell its automotive electronics business to Continental AG for approximately $1bn in cash.

Sales at the firm's networks segment reached $1.43bn, down 14 per cent on the year-ago quarter.

Operating earnings totalled $132m, compared with $234m in the year-ago quarter due to the decrease in sales and restructuring charges of $21m in the first quarter of 2006.

The company's outlook for the second quarter of 2006 is for sales of between $10.3bn and $10.5bn.
