Intel saw the biggest improvements in its sales of laptop chips, boosting its share to 66 per cent from April's low of 55 per cent.

However, AMD continues to dominate the desktop market since overtaking Intel in September 2005.

Some 73 per cent of all desktop systems sold at US retail stores are powered by AMD processors.

Current Analysis suggested that Intel piggy-backed on successful marketing campaigns and price reductions from Toshiba, which accounted for nearly 50 per cent of all notebook retail sales during the period.
