Intel will finally debut its dual-core chip technology on 18 July.

The chip, which is codenamed Montecito, is the first dual processor CPU to be based on the company's Itanium architecture.

The Montecito range was originally scheduled for release in October 2005, but Intel delayed its mass production because it was not happy with the component quality.

The processor contains more than 1.7 billion transistors and has a 24MB cache.

Recent research by Current Analysis showed that Intel outsold AMD in June for the first time since December 2005.
