A Japanese price cut for the PlayStation 3 will not apply to the US or Europe, Sony admitted today.
"It is just for Japan at the moment," a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe told vnunet.com.
The price in Japan has been slashed by 20 per cent, from 62,790 Yen (£284) to 49,980 Yen (£226).
"It looks like the initial price that was announced for Japan was based on the US and European price and it was too high for the Japanese market," the spokesman added. "So that's why everyone else is staying put."
Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told the press that there are "no plans right now" to reduce the Sony PS3 price in the US.
Sony had previously announced that the 20GB version of the console will include HDMI output as standard.
