HP stands by its Sony batteries

No risk of fire, claims vendor

HP has decided not to issue a recall of batteries manufactured by Sony, the two companies said in a joint statement.

HP stated that it has not identified any safety issues with the two Sony-manufactured battery cell models that the company uses in its laptops.

The vendor believes that the durability of the battery packs and built-in safety circuits will sufficiently protect users against the overheating issues that have led other manufacturers to recall millions of notebook batteries.

"After discussing the issues with Sony, we believe that we have the proper charging and circuit protections in place to prevent an overheating episode," said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager of HP's notebook business unit.

The HP cells were among those that Sony included in its global recall, which came after Dell and Apple recalled roughly six million laptop batteries that posed potential overheating risks.

Since Sony announced the global replacement programme, Toshiba and Lenovo have also recalled batteries manufactured by Sony.
