Telecoms regulator
Ofcom has
announced a new regulatory code for VoIP providers to ensure that consumers
understand the capabilities of their service.
Companies offering a VoIP service in the UK from June 2006 must inform
customers whether they have access to emergency services, and make it clear
whether the connection will be cut off in the event of a power outage.
Providers must also make it clear whether services such as directory
assistance and listings are available, and tell customers whether they can keep
their telephone number if they decide to switch providers at a later date.
"Ofcom has decided to put in place measures to ensure that consumers have
access to information which helps them make informed purchasing decisions,"
said an official Ofcom statement.
"As VoIP usage in the UK continues to grow, and the market develops further,
Ofcom will continue to review and develop its approach to regulation to ensure
that consumers gain the full benefits of VoIP services."
