Ofcom paves the way for wireless innovation

Spectrum red tape to be dropped

Written by Iain Thomson

Ofcom wants to open up the radio spectrum to more licence-exempt applications, including wireless devices and Wi-Fi equipment.

The media regulator also plans to remove red tape surrounding low-power devices that transfer data between handheld devices such as digital cameras and iPods.

The Licence-Exemption Framework Review proposes less regulation around the radio spectrum, " open[ing] up high-frequency bands for new and innovative applications" from cordless phones and car key-fobs to vehicle anti-collision radar.

The consultation also proposes relaxed regulations around the development of new wireless services and the use of bands above 100 GHz, currently going largely unused.

The review is due to complete in June and specific proposals will be published in 2008.
