Intel claims world's fastest mobile processor

Core 2 Extreme X7800 aimed at gaming community

Intel has unveiled processors which the company claims are among the fastest in the world.

The Core 2 Extreme X7800 is the fastest laptop chip available, according to the chip giant, with dual-core processors running at 2.6GHz each and 4MB L2 cache.

Aimed at the gaming community, Intel has removed the blocks that stop the processor being overclocked, although this may cause cooling problems.

"Laptops are the fastest growing computing market segment, and there is increasing demand from those who crave the ultimate in video, gaming and design computing performance yet want the freedom and flexibility of a laptop," said Mooly Eden, vice president of Intel's Mobile Platforms Group.

The company also unveiled three Core 2 Duo desktop processors, running at between 2.3GHz and 3GHz, a Core 2 quad-core processor and the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, a 3GHz chip with a 1333MHz front side bus and 8MB L2 cache.
