Griffin Technology unveiled its Evolve wireless speaker system at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin last week.

The device consists of a low-profile deck and a pair of 4in speakers which automatically recharge when placed on the dock. The batteries can deliver up to 10 hours of music between charges.

The speakers boast a range of 50 metres throughout a house and even further in an open environment, according to Griffin.

Each time a speaker docks with the base to recharge it is synchronised to the unique network ID of that base, allowing for an unlimited number of speakers to be synchronised with a single transmitting base.

This allows customers to purchase additional speakers to place around the house, or for friends to bring in their speakers for parties.

The speaker automatically configures itself as the left or right channel depending on the dock on which it is placed. The deck also gives users the option of broadcasting audio in stereo or mono.

The base includes an Apple Universal Dock that supports dockable iPod models from the iPod mini up to the fifth-generation iPod video.

The Evolve also includes several auxiliary audio and video inputs and outputs allowing users to add the device to an existing audio system or TV.

A Griffin spokeswoman told vnunet.com that the company is considering adding more channels and a dedicated sub-woofer to the platform creating a complete surround-sound system.

Evolve will be available in the US in time for the holiday season and will retail for $350. It should hit the shelves in the UK early next year for around £173.
