Converged voice services ring the changes in Europe

CVS shaping up to be the broadband killer app

Written by Robert Jaques

Converged voice service is shaping up as the next-generation killer application among broadband consumers in Europe, market watchers predict.

A recent In-Stat survey found that, given a choice of wireless-only, fixed-line only or integrated fixed/mobile voice service, European consumers chose integrated services by a "clear majority".

Converged voice service is defined as a fully converged service that integrates the functionality of an IMS-based IP network and TDM mobile network to offer fixed/mobile voice capabilities with a common feature set.

"In-Stat's research supports the conclusion that there is broad consumer demand for converged voice services," said In-Stat analyst Keith Nissen.

"Service providers throughout Europe, North America, and Asia need to assess the impact that this can have on their domestic markets."

According to recent research by In-Stat, 60 per cent of European broadband consumer households would prefer using an integrated fixed/mobile voice service such as converged voice service.

The study shows that 70 per cent to 80 per cent of consumers favour unified messaging.

In-Stat's report also found that consumers "strongly prefer" network-based address books, flat-rate service bundles, unlimited local/national calling, and a single supplier of services.
