US IT job market remains stagnant

Slight dip in number of IT jobs reported last month

Written by Robert Jaques

IT employment in the US continues to "move sideways", according to the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB).

The organisation reported a slight dip in September when employment of IT workers declined by 3,000 places (less than 0.1 per cent) from the previous month.

However, NACCB figures reveal that US IT employment has been essentially unchanged for more than a year.

"The absence of growth over the past year is primarily attributable to the lack of supply of talent, rather than receding demand," said NACCB chief executive Mark Roberts.

"With few exceptions, my member companies which provide IT staff augmentation report brisk demand for their services.

"These anecdotal reports are consistent with extraordinarily low unemployment rates in many IT skill sets (below one per cent), limited availability of new H-1B visas, and an insufficient number of new entrants into the workforce pursuing careers in IT."

The IT employment index is published by the NACCB which represents IT staffing and technology firms across the US.
