The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard will begin a "steep decline" this year in the face of strong competition from technologies including HDMI and DisplayPort, experts predict.

Analyst firm In-Stat forecasts that DVI will decline from 112 million device shipments in 2007 to just three million in 2011.

"HDMI's success continues to be enormous, especially in the consumer electronics segment," said In-Stat analyst Brian O'Rourke.

"Close to 90 per cent of digital TV shipments in 2007 are expected to include HDMI, and its penetration of large markets such as set-top boxes continues to increase."

Recently published research by In-Stat found that 143 million HDMI-enabled devices shipped in 2007.

DVI-enabled device shipments, on the other hand, will decline sharply through 2011 due primarily to competition from DisplayPort.

In-Stat noted that several PC original equipment manufacturers released HDMI-enabled media-centric notebooks in 2007, including Toshiba, Sony and HP.
